The Obedient Ball

Force & Mechanics

★Exhibit Content: Bernoulli's Principle ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: Press the "Start" button and observe the movement of the ball in the airflow. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a vertical pipe and a connected horizontal U-shaped tube, a very light ball, and a fan. Press the button to start the fan, and you will see the ball moving along the airflow. When it reaches the upper end of the U-shaped tube, it obediently changes its vertical upward direction and enters the horizontal pipe. ★Scientific Principle: Why does the ball obey so obediently? According to Bernoulli's principle: the faster the fluid flow, the lower the pressure; the slower the flow, the higher the pressure. When the fan starts, the vertical upward airflow lifts the ball inside the pipe and moves it upward along the center of the airflow. The vertical airflow creates a negative pressure inside the U-shaped tube, with the lowest pressure at the lower end. When the ball reaches the upper end of the U-shaped tube, under the action of negative pressure, it obediently changes its vertical upward direction, is drawn into the horizontal pipe, and moves toward the lower end.
