Which Stops Spinning First
★Exhibit Content: Moment of Inertia ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: Visitors turn the handwheels, observe the rotation process of the shafts, and compare which one stops first. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a platform, handwheels, protective covers, and two rotating shafts with different distributions of small balls. Try turning the two handwheels with the same force, and think about which one will stop rotating first? ★Scientific Principle: Inertia is an inherent property of an object, and the measure of an object's inertia when rotating around an axis is called the moment of inertia. The moment of inertia depends on the shape of the object, the distribution of mass, and the position of the axis of rotation. Objects with the same mass but different mass distributions have different moments of inertia. When the mass is distributed farther from the center, the moment of inertia is larger, and the rotation time is longer; when the mass is distributed closer to the center, the moment of inertia is smaller, and the rotation time is shorter. Figure skaters adjust their moment of inertia by extending and retracting their arms during a spin to control their rotational speed.
