Sailing Against the Wind

Force & Mechanics

★Exhibit Content: Basic principles of fluid mechanics, Bernoulli's principle, and the relationship between heading and sail ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the start button, and the fan starts running; 2. Rotate the turntable to adjust the boat's direction of travel; 3. When the angle between the wind direction and the boat's direction of travel is greater than zero, the sail bulges under the wind force, the wind speed on the windward side of the sail is fast, and the wind speed on the other side is slow. Observe the phenomenon of the sailboat sailing against the wind, and understand Bernoulli's principle and the relationship between heading and sail. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a fan, a turntable, a sailboat model, etc. Press the start button, and the fan starts running. Rotate the turntable to adjust the boat's direction of travel. When the angle between the wind direction and the boat's direction of travel is greater than zero, the sail bulges under the wind force, the wind speed on the windward side of the sail is fast, and the wind speed on the other side is slow. According to Bernoulli's principle, the side with the lower gas flow speed exerts a lateral pressure on the side with the higher flow speed, and it is under this pressure that the sailboat sails against the wind. ★Scientific Principle 1. Bernoulli's principle: A basic principle of fluid mechanics, proposed by Swiss fluid physicist Daniel Bernoulli in 1726. Its essence is the conservation of mechanical energy of an ideal fluid. Under ideal conditions, at any cross-section of the same flow tube, the sum of the kinetic energy, potential energy, and pressure potential energy per unit volume of fluid is a constant. For flow at equal height, the greater the flow speed, the smaller the pressure. 2. Principle of sailboat sailing against the wind: A sailboat sailing against the wind does not sail directly into the wind, but at a certain angle to the wind direction. The angle between the hull direction and the wind direction is close to 120 degrees (about 60 degrees against the wind). The sail surface receives wind force F, and the vector F is decomposed into F1 and F2. F1 cancels out with the water resistance along the side of the boat, and the sailboat moves forward in the direction of F2, that is, the direction of the bow; the boat can reach its destination by tacking in a "Z" shape. The angle between the hull and the wind direction is an important factor for smooth sailing.
