Karman Vortex Street
★Exhibit Content: An important phenomenon in fluid mechanics, the Kármán vortex street ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Rotate the buttons of different shapes and observe the flow process of the water in the protective cover; 2. Observe the vortices of various sizes formed when the water flow passes the boundary of the bluff body, and understand the principle of the Kármán vortex street. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a display stand, three knobs, three modules, a water tank, an air outlet device, and a striped light box. The three knobs are fixed on the display stand, and the three modules are placed in the water tank, each controlled by the corresponding knob. The air outlet device is located below the water tank and is always on to keep the water in the tank moving. The striped light box is above the water tank, projecting the lines on the light onto the water. Visitors turn the knobs left and right to control the position of the corresponding modules in the water tank; when the water flow encounters the metal blocks, the originally non-interfering stripes change shape under the action of the water waves, bypass the left and right sides of the metal blocks, and when they merge again, orderly line vortices rotating in the opposite direction are generated on both sides of the metal blocks. ★Scientific Principle: The Kármán vortex street is an important phenomenon in fluid mechanics and is common in nature: under certain conditions, when a steady incoming flow passes around certain objects, two rows of line vortices with opposite rotation directions and regular arrangement are periodically shed from both sides of the object, and after nonlinear effects, a Kármán vortex street is formed. For example, water flowing past bridge piers, wind blowing past tall towers, chimneys, power lines, etc., will form a Kármán vortex street. The Kármán vortex street has important applications, and it is necessary to understand its research history and application status. The theory of the "Kármán vortex street" was proposed by Theodore von Kármán, who discovered that when water flows past a cylinder, if the speed is fast enough, the flow direction is no longer vertically backward, but forms two rows of vortices; the region between the two rows of vortices is called a vortex street, which generates drag on moving objects. The movement pattern of a fish swinging its tail fin causes the water behind it to form a "reverse Kármán vortex street," generating thrust on the fish and making swimming more energy-efficient; robot designs refer to this pattern to improve propulsion efficiency.
