Moment of Inertia
★Exhibit Content: Moment of Inertia ★Interaction: Mechanical Interaction ★Operation: 1. Choose any two discs and place them at the high point of the track; 2. Release the discs and observe the rolling speed of the two discs. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a set of inclined tracks and multiple discs of the same mass but different mass distributions. Visitors place different discs at the top of the track and release them, observing the speed differences as they roll down the incline, intuitively understanding the effect of moment of inertia on the rotational state of an object. This exhibit transforms an abstract physics concept into a hands-on comparative experiment, helping visitors develop an intuitive understanding of the relationship between moment of inertia, angular acceleration, and mass distribution. ★Scientific Principle: The moment of inertia depends only on the shape of the rigid body, the mass distribution, and the position of the axis of rotation, and is independent of the rotational state of the rigid body about the axis. The closer the mass of an object is to the axis, the shorter the radius of gyration, the smaller the moment of inertia, and the easier it is to rotate about the axis. When two wheels have the same mass, the one with mass distributed farther from the axis has a larger moment of inertia; under the same torque, the one with the larger moment of inertia rotates more slowly, and vice versa.
