Coriolis Ring

Force & Mechanics

★Exhibit Content: Coriolis force phenomenon ★Interaction: Mechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Press the start button, and the two rotating wheels begin to turn; 2. Rotate the horizontal turntable clockwise and observe the tilt direction of the vertical bead chain plane; 3. Rotate the horizontal turntable counterclockwise and observe the change in tilt direction of the vertical bead chain plane; 4. Compare the tilt effects under different rotation directions to understand the action law of the Coriolis force. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit mainly consists of a support base, solid wood tabletop, turntable, support frame, rotating motor, bead chain, transparent protective cover, etc. On the turntable, there are two back-to-back vertical rotating wheels of the same shape, size, and speed. Each wheel is connected to a loop of bead chain by a soft nylon rope. When the two vertical wheels rotate rapidly at the same angular velocity, the bead chain also rotates in a vertical plane, forming a vertical circular plane. Interaction: When the visitor rotates the horizontal turntable clockwise, under the action of the Coriolis force, the beads in the upper half and the lower half experience lateral forces in opposite directions, causing the originally vertical circular plane to tilt to one side; when the visitor rotates the horizontal turntable counterclockwise, the circular plane can be seen tilting to the other side. ★Scientific Principle: The Coriolis force is an inertial force experienced by a moving object due to the existence of a rotating reference frame such as the Earth's rotation, and its direction is related to the direction of the object's motion and the rotation direction of the reference frame. In this exhibit, when the horizontal turntable rotates, the vertically rotating bead chain is subjected to the Coriolis force. The beads in the upper half and lower half experience lateral forces in opposite directions, causing the bead chain plane to tilt, intuitively demonstrating the effect of the Coriolis force.
