Hero's Fountain
★Exhibit Content: The fluid mechanics principle of a fountain driven by air pressure and water level difference ★Interaction: Mechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Turn the handwheel to raise the container filled with water; 2. Observe the water level change in the container and watch the fountain spray effect at the top; 3. Understand the relationship between continuous fountain spraying and water level difference and air pressure. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a liftable container, a sealed water storage container, connecting hoses, a top fountain basin, and a handwheel control mechanism. Visitors adjust the container height by turning the handwheel, changing the water level difference, and intuitively experience how water potential energy and air pressure changes drive the fountain spray, and understand the working process of humanity's earliest fountain device. ★Scientific Principle: Through an experimental device, demonstrate the fountain invented by Hero of Alexandria in ancient Rome and its working process. Hero's fountain uses the water level difference between different containers to generate potential energy, driving water to spray under air pressure. The device consists of three containers: an open basin at the top and two sealed containers below, connected by hoses. When water from the open basin flows into the sealed container filled with air, the air inside is compressed, the air pressure increases, pushing water from the other sealed container up through the pipe, forming a fountain at the top; when the lower sealed container is filled with water, the air pressure equalizes, and the fountain stops spraying.
