Upright the Wheel
★Exhibit Content: Conservation of Angular Momentum, Moment of Inertia ★Interaction: Mechanical Interactive Demonstration ★Operation: 1. Approach the exhibit and read the knowledge introduction; 2. Stand the wheel upright and spin it rapidly, observe its motion and think about the principle; 3. After participation, leave the exhibit. ★Exhibit Description: "Standing Wheel" is an interactive exhibit for popular science on mechanical principles, designed for physics science exhibition areas, and is a recommended exhibit of KexMall. The exhibit features two suspended rods, each with a bicycle wheel mounted at the end. Visitors can observe that when the wheel is stood upright and spun rapidly, it rotates around the rod without falling, intuitively demonstrating the effects of conservation of angular momentum and moment of inertia, helping to understand the inertial properties of rotating objects. ★Scientific Principle: The wheel does not fall when spinning because of the object's moment of inertia. Moment of inertia is a measure of the inertia of a rigid body rotating about an axis (the property of a rotating object to maintain its uniform circular motion or rest). In rotational dynamics, it plays the role analogous to mass in linear dynamics, and can be understood as an object's inertia to rotational motion, used to establish relationships between physical quantities such as angular momentum, angular velocity, torque, and angular acceleration. A rotating object has the inertia to maintain its direction of rotation (direction of the rotation axis). When the disk spins at a high speed up to a certain rotational speed, due to conservation of angular momentum, the direction of its rotation axis remains stable and unchanged, so the wheel rotates around the rod without falling. The role of moment of inertia in rotational dynamics is equivalent to mass in linear dynamics; it can be formally understood as an object's inertia to rotational motion, used to establish relationships among several quantities such as angular momentum, angular velocity, torque, and angular acceleration. A rotating object has the inertia to maintain its direction of rotation (direction of the rotation axis). When the disk spins at a high speed up to a certain rotational speed, it remains stable and unchanged due to inertia.
