Magic Box

Force & Mechanics

★Exhibit Content: Science popularization experience of the law of conservation of angular momentum ★Interaction: Electromechanical interactive demonstration ★Operation: 1. Press the start button to start the drive device rotating; 2. The indicator light turns on and the buzzer sounds, steadily lift and slowly rotate the box; 3. Put the magic box back in place. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a suitcase body, a flywheel turntable installed inside, a start button, a motor drive device, a protective device, a display stand, an indicator light, a buzzer, etc. During the exhibit activity, after the visitor presses the start button, the motor drives the driving wheel to rotate, and through friction, the flywheel inside the suitcase rotates synchronously. When the turntable rotation speed reaches a certain value, the drive device stops working. At this time, the buzzer sounds and the indicator light turns on. Participants can lift the magic box to start the experience. The lifted magic box will produce a magical force when slightly tilted, as if it wants to break free from the participant's control. The suitcase body is designed to be transparent, so participants can clearly see the movement of the turntable installed inside the box. To make it easy for children to lift the magic box, the weight of the magic box should be as light as possible, controlled within 3KG. ★Scientific Principle: What force drives the suitcase to produce such a peculiar force? It is the law of conservation of angular momentum at work. The law of conservation of angular momentum states that when the net external torque on a system is zero, the angular momentum of the system remains constant. When the flywheel inside the suitcase rotates at high speed, the angular momentum of the entire suitcase system is constant. When we hold the suitcase and try to lift it, we apply an external force to change this angular momentum balance system, so it will have an energy that maintains the original angular momentum and hinders the change of balance. This is the source of the force we feel that the suitcase wants to break free from our control.
