Aerial Imaging

Mobile Science Museum · Optics

Operation: 1. Press the "Start" button; 2. Observe the fan blade rotation phenomenon. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of a swing rod, LED lights, a motor, etc. Visitors press the "Start" button to observe the image changes presented during the rotation of the swing rod. Scientific Principle: Why does an image appear on the rotating plane of the fan blades? When the human eye observes a scene, light signals are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve to form vision, but after the light action ends, the visual image in the brain does not disappear immediately, but persists for 0.1 to 0.4 seconds. This is the phenomenon of persistence of vision. The fan blades have LED light groups; when rotating, the circuit controls the LEDs to emit light according to program instructions, and the light emitted at each position on the rotating plane is part of a complete image. Due to the persistence of vision effect, the image of the luminous point is retained in the brain for a short period. Therefore, the image of the luminous point at each position on the rotating plane of the fan blades is retained by the brain. These retained luminous point images superimpose with the currently seen luminous point, allowing a complete image to be seen in the air. The playback of movies, television, and animated films is designed and produced using the persistence of vision effect. Look around and find which other exhibits utilize the persistence of vision phenomenon?
