Optical-Fiber Transmission

Mobile Science Museum · Optics

Operation: 1. Press the "Start" button, the laser emits a laser beam. Turn the left handwheel to adjust the light angle and observe the transmission path of the laser inside the glass rod. You can clearly see the total internal reflection propagation process of the laser beam inside the curved optical fiber model; 2. Press the "Start" button, turn the dial to direct the light toward the collection area on the tabletop, and observe the changes in the display area. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of two parts: a total internal reflection principle demonstration device and an optical fiber transmission demonstration device. The total internal reflection principle demonstration device is composed of a laser, a transparent rod, a handwheel, and a start button. Press the button, turn the handwheel, adjust the laser incidence angle, and observe the total internal reflection phenomenon of the laser inside the glass rod. Scientific Principle: What is the total internal reflection phenomenon of light? When light travels from an optically denser medium to an optically less dense medium, and the incidence angle is greater than the critical angle, the refracted light completely disappears, leaving only the reflected light. This phenomenon is called total internal reflection. The optical fiber transmission demonstration device is composed of a light source, a pattern dial, an optical fiber bundle, a handwheel, and a start button. Press the button to light up the light source, turn the handwheel to select a pattern, and the same pattern will appear in the display area at the other end of the optical fiber. How does an optical fiber transmit patterns? Optical fibers use the principle of total internal reflection to transmit light from one end to the other. A single optical fiber transmits a single point of light, while an optical fiber array formed by a bundle of fibers can also transmit images, so the pattern on the dial appears in the display area. Optical fiber communication uses light as a carrier and utilizes the principle of total internal reflection to transmit information over long distances with almost no loss.
