Thread the Needle
Operation: Hold the string and try to thread it through the hole while looking through the viewing hole. Function Overview: This exhibit consists of a plane mirror reflection device, a perforated flat panel, and a string. Through the mirror reflection device, visitors can see the perforated panel behind and their own hand holding the string. Due to multiple reflections, the image seen by the visitor is offset from the actual position of the object, making it difficult to thread the string into the hole. This helps participants understand the imaging characteristics of a plane mirror. Scientific Principle: Why is threading so difficult? Because the hole in the mirror is the image formed by the plane mirror; it is equal in size to the object but reversed left-to-right. When looking at the hole in the mirror, the direction of threading is opposite to the actual direction, and the hand often deviates from the path involuntarily, causing hand-eye incoordination. After repeated practice, the brain gradually adapts to this change. Plane mirrors are widely used: dancers use them to correct posture, and periscopes made using the principle of plane mirrors can observe conditions above water from underwater.
