Peep at the Leopard Through a Tube

Mobile Science Museum · Optics

Operation: 1. Look directly at the display screen. Can you see the video that is playing? 2. Look at the screen through the "magnifying glass". Is the hidden image on the display screen clear at a glance? Exhibit Overview: The exhibit consists of a multimedia playback system, a liquid crystal display device (specially treated), and a "magnifying glass" observation device. By utilizing the imaging characteristics of the LCD screen, the LCD screen has been specially treated. When viewed directly, only a white area can be seen on the screen, but when viewed through the "magnifying glass", the animated content can be clearly seen. Scientific Principle: Why does the white LCD screen display dynamic images through the "magnifying glass"? Inside the "magnifying glass" is actually an important component of the LCD display—a polarizer. There are two polarizers in an LCD screen: one is the incident polarizer, and the other is the exit polarizer. When the polarization directions of the incident polarizer and the exit polarizer are at a 90° angle, applying voltage to the liquid crystal will block light from exiting, and not applying voltage will allow light to exit. When the incident polarizer and the exit polarizer are parallel, applying voltage to the liquid crystal will allow light to exit, and not applying voltage will block the light. Therefore, when a layer of polarizer is missing from the screen, we cannot see the image.
