Shifting Landscapes

Mobile Science Museum · Optics

Operation: Look at the landscape painting inside the light box through the lens on the turntable, and you will find that the black-and-white picture becomes a color picture. Rotate the turntable, and the colors of the landscape painting will change. Exhibit Overview: The exhibit consists of a black-and-white line drawing light box and a turntable device. When visitors look directly at the light box, they see a landscape painting outlined in black lines; when they look through the transparent glass on the turntable, they find that the line drawing has become a color picture; if they rotate the turntable, they discover that the color picture can also change colors—very magical! Scientific Principle: Why does the color presented by the landscape painting change when viewed through this lens? A polarizing film is embedded near the light source side inside the light box, so the emitted light is polarized. The outermost side of the light box is covered with transparent films of different thicknesses, and a polarizing film is attached to the inner side of the turntable. Because films of different thicknesses refract polarized light to different degrees, when the turntable is rotated, the polarizing film inside the turntable polarizes the direction of light polarization, and the light displays different colors and brightness.
