Grating Animation

Mobile Science Museum · Optics

Operation: Press the "Select Pattern" button to choose a pattern; manually move the grating plate to watch the grating animation. Exhibit Overview: The exhibit consists of a belt drive mechanism with printed patterns, a motor drive mechanism, a manual grating plate, etc. Visitors can use the pattern selection button to choose the pattern they want to view. There are 5 sets of patterns: galloping horse, walking person, bird, gear, and wave. Then, by moving the grid left and right, a magical scene appears: the static pattern comes to life. Scientific Principle: Why does a static pattern move? Grating animation, also known as Moiré animation, comprehensively utilizes the Moiré fringe principle and the persistence of vision phenomenon. When the grating and the base image are superimposed and stationary, the image observed by the participant is the result of mutual interference between the patterns of the two. When the grating plate is moved, the image formed in the brain via the optic nerve requires a delay of 0.1-0.4 seconds to disappear, allowing the dynamically changing Moiré fringe pattern to become coherent, thus forming a continuously moving animation. In daily life, Moiré fringes are mainly applied in the field of sensing and detection, while the persistence of vision phenomenon is more commonly applied in film, animation, and other audiovisual fields.
