Bending Water Stream

Mobile Science Museum · Optics

Operation: 1) Press the "Start" button to observe the water flow phenomenon; 2) Press the "Switch" button to observe the water flow phenomenon. Exhibit Overview: The exhibit consists of a display box, a strobe light group, a water source, a vibration device, and a control system. Visitors start the demonstration by pressing a button. The vibration device causes the flowing water to form an S-shaped trajectory. The strobe lights flash at a certain frequency, making the vibrating water appear curved. By switching the light frequency, the "curved water flow" also displays magical phenomena such as falling, hovering, and backflow. Scientific Principle: Why is the water flow curved? When the human eye observes a scene, light signals are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve to form vision, but after the light ceases, the visual image in the brain does not disappear immediately; it persists for 0.1 to 0.4 seconds. This exhibit is based on the principle of "persistence of vision." Because the water column vibrates at an acoustic frequency, combined with the effect of a strobe light at a matching frequency, the vibrating water flow appears curved. By switching the light frequency, the "curved water flow" also displays magical phenomena such as falling, hovering, and backflow.
