Spinning Silver Egg
Operation: Turn the handwheel and see what happens to the silver egg. Function Overview: This exhibit mainly consists of three rotatable magnets, a metal egg, a transparent disc, and a handwheel. The three magnets are placed below the disc at 120-degree angles to each other. For easy viewing, the disc is made of transparent material. The metal egg is placed on top of the disc. To prevent visitors from touching the exhibit, it is covered with an acrylic glass dome. When visitors turn the handwheel, the egg stands up under the action of gravity and friction. Scientific Principle: When visitors turn the handwheel, the magnets rotate to generate a rotating magnetic field. The metal egg is a closed conductor; the rotating magnetic field formed by the magnets induces an eddy current in the metal egg, creating a magnetic field. The interaction between the two magnetic fields makes the silver egg spin. Because the mass distribution of the silver egg is uneven and eccentric, when the silver egg rotates, it stands up under the action of centrifugal force, gravity, and friction.
