Human-Powered Generation

Mobile Science Museum · Electromagnetism

Operation: Turn the handwheel to drive the generator, toggle the switch to connect one or more electrical devices, and observe the operation of the fan, light bulb, and Ferris wheel. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of a fan, Ferris wheel model, light bulb electrical devices, generator mechanism, knife switch, and operating handwheel. Turning the handwheel drives the generator, toggling the switch connects different electrical devices, and the ammeter displays the corresponding change in current. Scientific Principle: Why does turning the handwheel become more laborious as more electrical devices are connected? The generator rotor is in a magnetic field; when the rotor turns, it cuts the magnetic lines of force, thereby generating an induced current in the closed circuit to supply the electrical devices in the circuit, and the pointer on the ammeter swings accordingly. As more electrical devices are connected to the circuit, the current required by the load increases correspondingly, which also increases the resistance to the generator's rotation. Therefore, one can feel that turning the handwheel is most laborious when the electrical load is at its maximum. The phenomenon of electromagnetic induction is widely used in electrical engineering, electronics, and electromagnetic measurement.
