Magnetic Damping

Mobile Science Museum · Electromagnetism

Operation: Place rings of different materials on the top of the tubes, then release them simultaneously to let them fall freely, and compare their falling speeds. Function Overview: The main body of the exhibit consists of five transparent acrylic tubes, each containing a permanent magnet. Each tube is fitted with a ring, and these rings vary in material, structure, and hole shape. Participants place different rings on the top of the tubes and release them simultaneously, discovering that the rings fall at different speeds. Scientific Principle: When a metal ring falls, it cuts through magnetic field lines, generating an induced current and creating a magnetic field around it. Since the magnetic field of the induced current always opposes the change in magnetic flux that caused it, the metal ring decelerates under the combined effect of the two magnetic fields; whereas a plastic ring does not generate an induced current, so there is no damping, and it falls rapidly.
