Static Wind Wheel

Mobile Science Museum · Electromagnetism

Operation: Turn the handwheel and observe the changes in the windmill. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of an electrostatic induction charging device, a windmill, and a protective cover. When the handwheel is turned, the electrostatic charging device generates charges through electrostatic induction, which are collected and accumulated in a Leyden jar. The discharge electrode then applies high voltage to the tips of the windmill, creating an electrostatic wind that drives the windmill to rotate. Scientific Principle: How does the windmill start rotating? This is caused by the electrostatic wind generated by the phenomenon of corona discharge. When the handwheel is turned to drive the electrostatic generator, electrostatic charges are continuously supplied to the Leyden jar through electrostatic induction. After the charges accumulate, the electrode connected to the Leyden jar performs corona discharge on the tips around the circumference of the windmill. The directed movement of ionized gas ions at the tips forms an electrostatic wind, and the reaction force of the electrostatic wind pushes the windmill to rotate rapidly.
