Hand Battery

Mobile Science Museum · Electromagnetism

Operation: 1. Grip any one metal bar on each side with both hands; observe whether the galvanometer needle deflects; 2. Switch to grip two different metal bars and observe changes in the direction and angle of needle deflection. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of two sets of metal bars and a galvanometer. Each set includes three materials: steel, copper, and aluminum bars, connected to the electrodes of the galvanometer. When the visitor grips two different metal bars with left and right hands, the galvanometer needle deflects, indicating that current is generated. Scientific Principle: The deflection of the needle indicates that current passes through the galvanometer, so how is the current generated? A basic battery requires positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte. In this exhibit, different metal bars serve as positive and negative electrodes, and sweat on human hands acts as the electrolyte, forming a simple battery. The chemical activity of the positive and negative electrodes differs; the negative electrode is more active than the positive electrode. They react chemically with sweat to generate electricity. Therefore, when both hands grip different metal bars, the galvanometer needle deflects, and it deflects toward the positive electrode of the hand battery. The three metal bars on the platform are steel, copper, and aluminum. Try several times; can you determine which of these three metals is the most chemically active and which is next? You can try making a potato battery or fruit battery with such metal plates.
