The Obedient Ball

Mobile Science Museum · Mechanics & Kinematics

Operation: Press the "Start" button and observe the movement of the ball in the airflow. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of a vertical pipe, a connected horizontal U-shaped pipe, a very light ball, and a fan. Press the button to start the fan, and you will see the ball moving along the airflow. When it reaches the upper end of the U-shaped pipe, it obediently changes its vertical upward direction and enters the horizontal pipe. Scientific Principle: Why does the ball obey so obediently? According to Bernoulli's principle: the faster the fluid flow, the lower the pressure; the slower the flow, the higher the pressure. When the fan starts, the vertical upward airflow lifts the ball in the pipe and moves it upward along the center of the airflow. The vertical airflow creates a negative pressure in the U-shaped pipe, with the lowest pressure at the lower end. When the ball reaches the upper end of the U-shaped pipe, under the action of negative pressure, it obediently changes its vertical upward direction, is drawn into the horizontal pipe, and moves toward the lower end. In daily life, the lift that makes airplanes fly, the banana kick in football, and the loop in table tennis are all applications of Bernoulli's principle. The discovery of Bernoulli's principle is of great significance for human understanding of the characteristics and laws of fluids.
