Double Cone Climbing Up

Mobile Science Museum · Mechanics & Kinematics

Operation: Place the cone at the lower end of the track, release it, and observe the direction of the cone's movement. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of a double cone and an inclined track. When the cone is placed at the lower end of the track, it is surprising to find that the cone actually rolls up along the track. Scientific Principle: What is the mystery behind this? Upon careful observation, you will find that the cone rolling up is only a surface phenomenon; in fact, during the cone's upward rolling, its center of gravity changes from high to low. The two sides of the inclined track are arranged in a V-shape, with one end low and the other high. At the low end, the distance between the tracks is small, the fulcrum is close to the center of the cone, and the cone's center of gravity is high; while at the high end, the distance between the tracks is large, the fulcrum is close to the outer edge of the cone, and the cone's center of gravity is low. Therefore, when the cone is placed at the lower end of the track, it will roll upward along the track. This is the secret of the cone rolling up. In a gravitational field, an object is acted upon by gravity and always moves according to the principle of lowering its center of gravity to seek stability. The principle of 'lowering the center of gravity to seek stability' is widely applied in fields such as automobiles and aviation.
