Centrifugal Force
Operation: Turn the handwheel and observe the change in the liquid level inside the container. Function Overview: This exhibit consists of a rotatable turntable and a demonstration device fixed on the rotating platform. Through interactive display, visitors can understand the centrifugal phenomenon. When visitors turn the handwheel to drive the turntable, they can see that due to centrifugal force, the liquid level in the transparent water tank changes, becoming lower in the middle and higher at the ends. Scientific Principle: What force causes the liquid level to change? This is caused by centrifugal force. Centrifugal force is a manifestation of inertia and does not actually exist. To make an object move in a circular path, it needs to be subjected to a force directed toward the center—that is, centripetal force. If a coordinate system is established with this object as the origin, it appears as if there is a force of the same magnitude but opposite direction to the centripetal force, causing the object to move away from the center of the circular motion. (When the force on the object is insufficient to provide the required centripetal force for circular motion, it appears as if the centrifugal force is greater than the centripetal force, and the object moves away from the center. This phenomenon is called the "centrifugal phenomenon".) If centrifugal force existed, it would balance with the centripetal force, resulting in a net force of zero, and the direction of velocity would not change, which is an equilibrium state and impossible for circular motion. Therefore, it proves that centrifugal force does not exist; that is, centrifugal force is named based on the effect of the force. Note: Centrifugal force as an inertial force does not actually exist. The great scientist Descartes made this mistake in his "vortex theory". Therefore, the following statement is incorrect: "When an object moves in a circular path, it experiences a tangential force in the direction of the tangent to its orbit, and a component of this force acts in the centrifugal direction, hence it is called centrifugal force."
