Magic Box

Mobile Science Museum · Mechanics & Kinematics

Operation: 1. Press the start button to activate the drive mechanism rotation; 2. The indicator light turns on and the buzzer sounds, then steadily lift and slowly rotate the box; 3. Return the magic box to its original position. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of a suitcase body, a flywheel disc installed within, a start button, a motor drive mechanism, a protective device, a display stand, an indicator light, a buzzer, etc. During the exhibit activity, after the visitor presses the start button, the motor drives the driving wheel to rotate, and through friction, the flywheel inside the suitcase rotates synchronously. When the rotation speed of the disc reaches a certain value, the drive mechanism stops working. At this time, the buzzer sounds and the indicator light turns on. Participants can lift the magic box to begin the experience. When the lifted magic box tilts slightly, it generates a magical force, as if it wants to break free from the participant's control. The suitcase body is designed to be transparent, allowing participants to clearly see the movement of the disc installed inside. To make it easy for children to lift the magic box, the weight of the magic box should be as light as possible, controlled within 3KG. Scientific Principle: What force drives the suitcase to produce such a peculiar force? It is the law of conservation of angular momentum at work. The law of conservation of angular momentum states that when the net external torque on a system is zero, the angular momentum of the system remains constant. When the flywheel inside the suitcase rotates at high speed, the entire suitcase system has a constant angular momentum. When we hold the suitcase and try to lift it, we apply an external force to change this angular momentum balance system, so it has an energy to maintain the original angular momentum that hinders the change in balance. This is the source of the force we feel as the suitcase trying to break free from our control.
