Rotation Blooms

Mobile Science Museum · Mechanics & Kinematics

Operation: Turn the handwheel; observe the movement of the petals. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of a planetary gear mechanism, belt drive mechanism, flower pattern, and display stand. Turn the handwheel, and you will see that driven by the transmission mechanism, the petals transform into a flower, and then decompose into petals. Scientific Principle: How do the petals form a 'flower' during movement? Each petal is controlled by gears used to transmit motion and force, such as planetary gear trains and synchronous pulleys. When the ring gear and planetary gears of the planetary gear train rotate at different speeds, the ring gear performs rotational motion, and the motion of the planetary gears is equivalent to a compound motion of rotation and revolution. The gear components connected to the planetary gears via synchronous pulleys also perform this compound motion, but the planetary gears and gear components only perform revolutionary motion relative to the ring gear. Therefore, each petal fixed on the gears forms a varied 'flower' through the intersection and overlap of revolutionary motions. Gears are ubiquitous in life, from the operation of large machines and the running of vehicles to the precise rotation of the hour, minute, and second hands in mechanical watches. After going home, search online and count how many gears are in a mechanical watch? What hands do they control respectively?
