Mechanical Gradient

Mobile Science Museum · Mechanics & Kinematics

Operation: Turn the handwheel to drive the "mechanical flower" to rotate and enjoy the beautiful mechanical gradient pattern. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of two sets of "mechanical flowers" moving in opposite directions and an operating transmission mechanism. When the visitor turns the handwheel to drive the "mechanical flower" to rotate, they can enjoy the beautiful mechanical gradient pattern. Scientific Principle: The gradient pattern seen by the visitor is actually a moiré pattern, which is the visual effect of interference between two lines or two objects at a constant angle and frequency. When the human eye cannot distinguish these two lines or two objects, only the interference pattern can be seen. This optical phenomenon is the moiré pattern. Gradient is a highly regular phenomenon. When applied in visual design, this phenomenon can produce a strong sense of perspective and spatial depth, and it is an orderly and rhythmic change. The degree of gradient is very important in design. If the degree of gradient is too large and the speed is too fast, it is easy to lose the regular effect unique to gradient, giving people a sense of incoherence and visual jumping. Conversely, if the degree of gradient is too slow, it will produce a sense of repetition, but a slow gradient will show detailed effects in design.
