Tangram

Mobile Science Museum · Mathematics

Operation: Use the 7 pieces on the exhibit stand to assemble shapes and see how many different figures you can create. Function Overview: This exhibit mainly consists of a stand, a rectangular slot, and 7 pieces of varying sizes. Through independent thinking, visitors use the seven pieces to assemble shapes and will discover that these simple seven pieces can form an infinite variety of figures, which helps develop visitors' intelligence. Scientific Principle: Tangram is an ancient traditional Chinese puzzle toy. As the name suggests, it consists of seven pieces. These seven pieces can be assembled into many shapes (over 1,600 types), such as triangles, parallelograms, irregular polygons. Players can also form them into various figures, images, animals, bridges, houses, towers, etc., as well as some Chinese and English letters. Tangram was invented by the working people of ancient China, with a history dating back at least to the 1st century BC, and it basically took shape by the Ming Dynasty. It was widely circulated among the Chinese people during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In Volume 1 of "Lenglu Zashi" by Lu Yitian of the Qing Dynasty, it is written: Recently, there are also tangram figures, with five forms and seven pieces, and their variations number over a thousand. They resemble objects and shapes, changing at will, and as a game, they are enough to relieve boredom and break monotony, so people commonly enjoy them. In the 18th century, tangram spread abroad. Joseph Needham said it is one of the oldest pastimes of the East, and to this day, a copy of "New Tangram Manual" is still preserved in the library of Cambridge University in England.
