Luban Lock

Mobile Science Museum · Mathematics

Operation: Assemble the Luban Lock and discover the mysteries of its structure. Function Overview: The Luban Lock is a mathematical game that originated from the mortise-and-tenon structure first created in ancient Chinese architecture. It is said to have been invented by Luban during the late Spring and Autumn period to the early Warring States period. This exhibit mainly consists of a display stand and several cross-shaped cube models. Through hands-on assembly by visitors, it allows them to understand the Luban Lock and helps develop the brain. Scientific Principle: The Kongming Lock, also called the Bagua Lock or Luban Lock, is a traditional Chinese civil engineering fixed connector. It was once a widely circulated folk intelligence toy in China, and also has names such as "Bie Men Gun", "Liu Zi Lian Fang", "Mo Nai He", and "Nan Ren Mu". The Kongming Lock uses no nails or ropes, relying entirely on the connection and support of its own structure, just like a piece of paper folded once can stand up. It demonstrates seemingly simple yet extraordinary wisdom. The Kongming Lock is said to have been invented by Luban from the late Spring and Autumn period to the early Warring States period. (Another legend says it was invented by Zhuge Liang during the Three Kingdoms period.) During the Three Kingdoms period, Kongming turned Luban's invention into a toy—the Kongming Lock.
