Slicing Geometric Solids

Mobile Science Museum · Mathematics

Operation: 1. Press the "Start" button to activate the light beam, and bring the geometric model into the interaction area; 2. Observe the cross-section shape of the geometric body "cut" by the light beam; 3. Rotate the geometric body to see whether the cross-section shape changes. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of a line laser, various common transparent geometric bodies, a laser holder, a geometric body storage box, and operation buttons. Visitors press the "Start" button to activate the line laser, generating a fan-shaped laser cutting plane. Place the transparent geometric body under the laser cutting plane to simulate cutting the geometric body; the laser leaves cross-sections of various shapes on the geometric body. Scientific Principle: For a geometric body, are the cross-sections formed by "cutting" at different positions the same? In solid geometry, a cross-section refers to the plane figure obtained by intersecting a geometric body (such as a cylinder, cone, sphere, rectangular prism, etc.) with a plane. The cross-section shapes of the same geometric body at different positions are not all the same. For example, for a cone, the cross-section shape may be a circle, an ellipse, a triangle, or a quadrilateral.
