Insulators and Conductors
Operation: Place different materials in the testing position to test and learn about insulators and conductors. Function Overview: There are 5 acrylic long tubes of the same size, each with a conductive cap at both ends. The tubes contain different materials: saltwater, pure water, steel fork, plastic spoon, and graphite pencil. When students connect a 9V battery, a small light bulb, and the long tube to form a circuit, they will find that tubes with different materials produce different effects: the bulb may light up brightly, dimly, or not at all. Through this experiment, students learn that different materials have different conductivity. Scientific Principle: Conductors and insulators: a. Conductors: Some objects conduct electricity well and are called conductors. For example: metals, human body, earth, graphite, acids, bases, saltwater solutions, etc. b. Insulators: Some objects do not conduct electricity well and are called insulators. For example: rubber, glass, plastic, ceramics, oil, pure water, dry paper, dry wooden sticks, dry air, etc.
