Automobile Clutch

Mobile Science Museum · Automotive

Operation: 1. Turn the handwheel to observe the structural movement of the clutch; 2. Lift the lever to observe the position changes of the pressure spring and pressure plate (friction plate). Function Overview: The exhibit consists of an automotive clutch demonstration mechanism and an operating device. It demonstrates the basic structure and working principle of an automotive clutch. Scientific Principle: How does a clutch work? The clutch is located between the engine and the transmission, used to transmit the torque stored on the engine flywheel to the transmission, ensuring that the vehicle transmits the appropriate driving force and torque to the drive wheels under different driving conditions. The diaphragm spring clutch consists of four parts: the driving part, the driven part, the pressing mechanism, and the control mechanism. During disengagement, when the clutch pedal is depressed, the free play of the clutch is first eliminated within the free travel, and then the separation gap is created within the working travel, disengaging the clutch. During engagement, as the clutch pedal is gradually released, the pressure plate moves forward under the action of the pressure spring, first eliminating the separation gap and applying sufficient pressing force on the working surfaces of the pressure plate, driven plate, and flywheel. Then the release bearing moves backward under the action of the return spring, creating free play, and the clutch engages.
