Shake Hands with Yourself

Optics & Eye Health

★Exhibit Content: Concave Mirror Imaging ★Interaction: Model Interaction ★Operation: Put your hand into the mirror opening and feel as if you are shaking hands with yourself. ★Exhibit Description: The main body of this exhibit is a concave mirror, demonstrating the imaging principle of a concave mirror. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. When visitors stand at different distances in front of a concave reflective mirror, they can see images formed at different positions along the optical axis. When a visitor's hand is placed at twice the focal length on the optical axis, its image coincides with the hand, as if shaking hands with oneself. ★Scientific Principle: According to the imaging principle of a concave mirror, when an object is placed at twice the focal length from the concave mirror on its central axis, an inverted real image of the same size is formed. A concave mirror forms images by reflection. Mirrors (including convex mirrors) are not instruments that transmit light but reflect it to form images, and light obeys the law of reflection. A concave mirror can not only converge parallel light to a focal point but also reflect light emitted from the focal point into parallel light. Imaging rules: When the object distance is less than the focal length, an upright, magnified virtual image is formed; the farther the object is from the mirror, the larger the image. When the object distance is greater than 1× the focal length and less than 2× the focal length, an inverted, magnified real image is formed; when the object distance equals 2× the focal length, an inverted, same-size real image is formed; when the object distance is greater than 2× the focal length, an inverted, diminished real image is formed; the farther the object is from the mirror, the smaller the image. A real image is formed on the same side as the object, while a virtual image is formed on the opposite side.
