Mirror Cube

Optics & Eye Health

★Exhibit Content: Mirror Cube ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: Pull the rope to control the inclined plate to move up and down, and observe the changes in the image on the mirror surface. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a mirror assembly made of a set of fully reflective flat mirrors and an inclined plate in the middle. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. A light strip is installed on the inclined plate. Turning the handwheel drives the inclined plate to move up and down, and a cube shape is formed in the mirror assembly model. The exhibit demonstrates the knowledge of the mirror cube through mechanical interaction. Four flat mirrors of different sizes and shapes are installed on the platform. When these four flat mirrors are combined at specific angles, the image of the colored strips on the flat mirrors undergoes multiple reflections, forming a cube image on the mirror surface. At this time, by pulling the rope on the platform, one can observe the size change of the cube formed by the colored strips on the mirror surface. By pulling the rope, the rope image undergoes multiple reflections in the flat mirror assembly, forming a cube image. By adjusting the length of the rope pulled, the size of the cube can be changed. ★Scientific Principle: Why does a triangular plate become a cube under the reflection of the mirror? As the handwheel rotates, the extending inclined plate becomes an increasingly larger right isosceles triangle. With the inclined plate as the boundary, the two upper mirror surfaces are perpendicular to each other, and the two lower mirror surfaces are also perpendicular to each other. Because the mirror surfaces are perpendicular to each other, their reflected images coincide. Through this special design, a complete face of the "cube" can be reflected between the inclined plate and the two adjacent mirrors. The four mirrors intersect in pairs, allowing the top, front, left, and right faces of the "cube" to be seen. Since at most three faces of a cube can be seen at the same time, as the inclined plate moves up and down, the "cube" appears accordingly.
