Moire Fringes (Wall-Mounted)

Optics & Eye Health

★Exhibit Content: Moiré patterns (Moiré fringes), visual interference, geometric optics ★Interaction: Electromechanical interaction ★Operation: Visitors press a button to start the rotatable fringe discs in the exhibit, observe the changes in the interference pattern produced by two superimposed patterns, intuitively experience the visual effects caused by slight rotation/displacement, and explore the scientific principle of Moiré patterns. ★Exhibit Description: This exhibit is a wall-mounted interactive science exhibit, consisting of two sets of rotatable superimposed fringe discs (spiral and checkerboard patterns), a mechanical rotation mechanism, and a display frame. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. Based on the optical principle of Moiré patterns, the exhibit superimposes two identical/similar periodic patterns. When one set of patterns undergoes slight rotation or displacement, a distinct interference pattern is produced, and small angular/positional changes cause dramatic visual changes in the interference pattern. By rotating the fringe discs, visitors can intuitively observe the visual effect from static patterns to dynamic interference fringes, experience the magical visual phenomenon of Moiré patterns, and understand the interference principle in geometric optics. ★Scientific Principle: Moiré patterns (Moiré fringes) are a geometric optical interference phenomenon. When two sets of grating patterns (lines, grids, etc.) with the same or similar period are superimposed, if the two sets of patterns undergo relative rotation or displacement, a new periodic interference pattern (Moiré pattern) is produced. Because the period difference between the two sets of patterns is amplified, slight rotation or displacement causes large visible changes in the interference pattern. This effect is widely used in precision measurement, optical sensing, and other fields. The human eye perceives the brightness and line changes of the pattern, intuitively capturing the visual effect of Moiré patterns and understanding the scientific essence of optical interference.
