Ames Room
★Exhibit Content: Popular science on size constancy and visual illusion principles ★Interaction: Multi-person interactive experience ★Operation (Visitor Experience) 1. Enter the room, a child stands in one corner, an adult stands in another corner; 2. A third person outside the room stands at a specific position and observes the scene where the child appears taller than the adult. ★Exhibit Description: Through the process of multiple people entering the Ames room, observe the phenomena seen and understand the principle of the Ames room. The exhibit is an interactive experience space, including a monitor. Visitors enter the room, a child stands in one corner, an adult stands in another corner, and a third person outside the room looks at them from a specific position, seeing the child appear taller than the adult. The Ames room provides a false background; the back wall is not parallel to the observer but slanted, and the floor conceals this slant, making people appear at different distances. This phenomenon is an optical illusion caused by size constancy. Size constancy is when two objects of equal size, one placed far and one placed near, although the near object forms a much larger image on the observer's retina than the far object, we perceive them as the same size. However, this perception is known to the experimenter; when an uninformed observer looks through pictures, the size constancy illusion causes a visual illusion. ★Scientific Principle: The Ames room is a perceptual demonstration conducted by American psychologist Adelbert Ames. The specific operation process is as follows: two people of the same height, one stands at the farthest extended end of the room, and the other stands at the retracted end. The two instantly appear to have a huge height difference visually; without actual height measurement, one might not believe that these two people are the same height.
