Illusion Experience - Secret of the Tricolor Flag
★Exhibit Content: Popular science on color visual illusions and the principle of color expansion/recession effects ★Interaction: Static observation + measurement verification experience ★Operation: (1) Observe the similarities and differences between the two flags, and use a ruler to measure the widths of the blue, yellow, and red sections of each flag; (2) Based on the measurement results, explore the visual secrets in the tricolor flags. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of acrylic high-definition UV-printed display panels featuring dual-proportion tricolor flag patterns. By displaying two sets of blue, yellow, and red stripes (simulating the French flag), visitors can intuitively experience the visual illusion caused by color expansion/recession effects, revealing the human eye's perceptual bias in size perception of different colors. This transforms abstract color psychology principles into an operable and fun interactive experience, suitable for visual illusion science museums and eye health science museums, and is a recommended exhibit for the PopsciCat exhibit mall. ★Scientific Principle: This exhibit is based on the principle of color visual expansion/recession effects: The most widely circulated proportions of the blue, white, and red colors of the French Republic flag are "37:30:33" or "37:33:30". Considering that the flag flutters in the wind, there is also a deliberate enlargement of the red part, which flutters most easily, allocated in a ratio of "30.33:37". According to the psychological effects of colors, we know that white and red are expanding colors, while blue is a receding color. If evenly distributed, the perceived size will be biased. Therefore, the proportions of white and red should be slightly reduced, and the proportion of blue slightly enlarged, to appear more balanced. In 1946, relevant laws stipulated that the three colors of the tricolor flag should be evenly distributed. Later, the law was revised to allow uneven distribution. The colors of the French Republic flag currently used are still evenly distributed.
