Turn the Arrow

Optics & Eye Health

★Exhibit Content: Müller-Lyer (arrow-shaped) visual illusion, mirror reflection imaging science interactive experience ★Interaction: Manual rotation mechanism + mirror visual observation interaction ★Operation: 1. Manually rotate the physical arrow 180° horizontally, directly observe the orientation of the physical arrow; 2. Simultaneously observe the orientation of the arrow's mirror image in the front plane mirror, compare the peculiar phenomenon that the physical and mirror arrow directions are completely opposite. ★Exhibit Description: "Rotating Arrow" is a wall-embedded interactive exhibit for visual illusion and geometric optics science, belonging to the visual optics exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit by KexMall. The exhibit uses a circular gradient embedded wall cabinet, internally equipped with a special 3D stereoscopic arrow model that can rotate 360° horizontally, a front plane reflection mirror, and externally paired with a white storage operation countertop. The arrow is a special irregular inclined 3D structure; no matter how the visitor rotates the physical object, the arrow always points to the right when viewed directly by the naked eye; the plane mirror follows the law of reflection to generate a mirror image, and the arrow in the mirror is fixed pointing to the left, with the physical and mirror directions completely opposite, intuitively demonstrating the dual optical knowledge of the Müller-Lyer arrow illusion and mirror reflection. ★Scientific Principle: 1. Müller-Lyer (arrow-shaped) visual illusion: The exhibit arrow uses a hidden inclined special 3D shape, distorting spatial perception from the normal observation angle; the brain is misled by the inclined contour, and no matter how the model rotates, it always determines the arrow points right; the classic arrow illusion principle is that for line segments of equal length, outward-extending diagonal lines at both ends make the segment appear longer, while inward-retracting diagonal lines make it appear shorter. This exhibit renders this principle in three dimensions to achieve directional visual deception. 2. Mirror reflection imaging: A plane mirror strictly follows the law of reflection, and the physical object is flipped left-right to form a mirror image; therefore, the physical arrow points right, and the image arrow in the mirror points left, forming a sharp directional contrast, intuitively verifying the left-right reversed imaging characteristic of a plane mirror.
