Vanishing Colors

Optics & Eye Health

★Exhibit Content: Popular science on the principle of object color rendering and monochromatic light characteristics ★Interaction: Immersive scene interactive installation ★Operation: Visitors enter the room in orange light mode and observe the color changes of everyday objects; then they come to the display stand and, within a specified time, sort the balls in the ball pool by color, experiencing the difficulty of color recognition under monochromatic light and understanding the relationship between object color rendering and light source. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a semi-enclosed interactive cabin, a daily necessities display area, a ball sorting challenge area, and gradient lighting components. The room lighting can switch between orange light and white light modes. Under the orange-yellow monochromatic light of a low-pressure sodium lamp, objects cannot reflect other colors, and originally colorful objects and balls appear in varying shades of orange, intuitively demonstrating the principle that "object color is determined by reflected light." It is suitable for science popularization displays in science and technology museums, youth activity centers, and physics science exhibition areas, and is a recommended exhibit for the PopsciCat exhibit mall. ★Scientific Principle: This exhibit is based on object color rendering and monochromatic light characteristics: The color of an object is determined by the light it reflects. Under monochromatic light, an object can only reflect light of that color, thus appearing monochromatic or dark; Low-pressure sodium lamps emit orange-yellow monochromatic light with a wavelength of 589nm, which cannot excite objects to reflect other colors, thus making colorful objects "lose their true colors"; Through scenario-based experience, the exhibit allows visitors to intuitively feel the influence of light source on the perception of object color.
