★Exhibit Content: Science popularization of geometric optical illusion principles ★Interaction: Wall-mounted interactive device ★Operation: 1. Non-parallel grid: Pull out the grid and observe the changes in the originally parallel rows; 2. Parallel line blinds: Open the blinds and observe whether the black lines on the blinds are a set of parallel lines; 3. Lines of equal length: Compare the illusion of different lengths produced by them under different figures; 4. Are the lines curved? Compare the illusion of curvature produced by them under different figures. ★Exhibit Description: Through interactive operation, observe optical illusion phenomena and understand the scientific principles of geometric optical illusions. The exhibit consists of four parts: "Non-parallel grid", "Parallel line blinds", "Lines of equal length", and "Are the lines curved?", and is a recommended exhibit for the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. By operating the exhibit, different optical illusion graphic effects can be observed: line segments of equal length show obvious length differences in different figures. ① Non-parallel grid: After pulling out, the originally parallel rows appear non-parallel; ② Parallel line blinds: Open the blinds, and the black lines behind the blinds are actually a set of parallel lines; ③ Lines of equal length: Compare the illusion of different lengths produced by them under different figures; ④ Are the lines curved? Compare the illusion of curvature produced by them under different figures. ★Scientific Principle: The illusion phenomenon in which the geometric elements constituting a figure influence each other, causing the observer's experience of the length, direction, size, and shape of the geometric figure to be inconsistent with the facts, is called geometric optical illusion. The geometric properties of a visual object differ from the geometric properties of the corresponding object in the visual field. Although the visual object is three-dimensional, its image on the retina is a two-dimensional view with x and y coordinates. Therefore, the geometric attributes of the visual object, such as the position of points and the length, direction, and curvature of lines, undergo certain transformations, leading to illusions. The occurrence of geometric optical illusions, in addition to the deformation of retinal optical imaging, is also related to the perceptual experience formed by the individual over a long period, that is, attributing the visual target to an inappropriate object category. Geometric optical illusions can be measured by psychophysical methods, such as deliberately applying opposite deformation to the target object and observing whether the illusion effect weakens or disappears. Illusions in which the geometric composition such as visual size, length, area, direction, and angle is significantly different from the actual measured numbers are called geometric optical illusions.
