Visible but Untouchable

Optics & Eye Health

★Exhibit Content: Concave mirror reflection imaging, spherical mirror optical imaging principles science experience ★Interaction: Pure optical visual observation interactive demonstration ★Operation: 1. Stand at the observation window above the exhibit and watch the three-dimensional animal model image suspended above the opening; 2. Reach out and try to touch the image at the window to intuitively experience the wonderful phenomenon of an image that can be seen but not touched. ★Exhibit Description: "Visible but Untouchable" is a spherical floor-standing interactive exhibit for geometric optics science, belonging to the optical imaging exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit by the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The exhibit uses a light blue + white spherical integrated sheet metal shell, with a metal safety protective round tube guardrail around the top, and a circular observation window in the center of the top cover; inside the equipment cavity, a large-diameter high-precision concave mirror and a three-dimensional animal physical model are installed. The physical model is placed at twice the focal length of the concave mirror. After light is reflected by the mirror, an equal-sized three-dimensional real image is formed at the window position. Visually, the animal model floats above the opening, but when visitors reach out to touch it, they cannot contact the entity, intuitively distinguishing optical virtual images from real objects, and concretely explaining the unique reflection imaging law of concave mirrors. ★Scientific Principle: This exhibit follows the law of reflection and the imaging law of concave mirrors. When an object is placed at twice the focal length of a concave mirror, the reflected real image is also located at twice the focal length; the animal physical model is housed inside the exhibit shell, and light is reflected and converged by the large concave mirror, accurately projecting the three-dimensional image to the top observation window. The human eye can only observe the real image formed by optical reflection, and there is no real object at the window position, so the image can only be seen but not touched, intuitively demonstrating the core optical knowledge of concave mirror reflection imaging and the distinction between real and virtual images.
