Total Internal Reflection

Optics & Eye Health

★Exhibit Content: Total internal reflection of light, underlying principles of fiber-optic communication, popular science electromechanical interactive experience ★Interaction: Button start + knob adjustment electromechanical optical interactive demonstration ★Operation: 1. Press the button on the console to turn on the laser, and visually observe the propagation path of the green laser inside the curved water column; 2. Rotate the adjustment knob to change the spray arc and distance of the water column, and compare and observe the morphological changes of the laser propagation trajectory. ★Exhibit Description: "Total Internal Reflection" is a desktop interactive exhibit for popular science on geometric optics and communication technology, belonging to the optics and information technology exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit by the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The exhibit adopts a standard science console for municipal science and technology museums, equipped with a transparent high-transparency acrylic sealed protective cabin, curved water column spray mechanism, green laser emission module, control buttons and adjustment knob, rear black decorative backboard, and popular science graphic description board. The device sprays a continuous curved water curtain column, and the laser enters the interior of the water column, continuously undergoing total internal reflection at the water-air interface. The light bends and propagates along the curved water column, intuitively replicating the light transmission process inside an optical fiber. By changing the curvature of the water column, it clearly demonstrates the influence of the incident angle on the total internal reflection light path, and explains the core principles of fiber-optic communication. ★Scientific Principle: At the interface of two media with different refractive indices, both refraction and reflection occur simultaneously; when light travels from water (optically denser medium) into air (optically less dense medium) and the incident angle is greater than the critical angle, the light no longer refracts and is entirely reflected at the interface. This phenomenon is total internal reflection of light. After the laser enters the water column, it undergoes multiple total internal reflections at the water-air tube wall interface, propagating forward along the curved water column in a zigzag light path with extremely low energy loss; modern fiber-optic communication utilizes this principle, where optical signals undergo repeated total internal reflections at the interface between the fiber core and cladding, transmitting data signals over long distances without loss. Adjusting the water column spray distance changes the light incident angle, and the light path morphology changes accordingly, intuitively verifying the constraint relationship between the critical angle and total internal reflection.
