Cylinder and Sphere Imaging
★Exhibit Content: Optical refraction, spherical/cylindrical lens imaging, visual distortion optics science popularization interactive experience ★Interaction: Manual turntable rotation optical observation interaction ★Operation: Rotate the top turntable to sequentially switch between different transparent water-filled cylinders and solid glass ball optical paths. Observe the central science cat mascot through the lenses and compare the image stretching, inversion, and multiple image changes under different lenses. ★Exhibit Description: "Cylinder and Sphere Imaging" is a circular desktop interactive exhibit for geometric optics science popularization, belonging to the lens imaging optics exhibition area, and is a recommended exhibit for the PopsciCat Exhibit Store. The exhibit uses a white and blue two-color layered circular operation table. The tabletop is equipped with a 360° manually rotatable turntable. Four groups of transparent vertical cylinders are evenly distributed on the turntable, including water-filled cylinders and built-in solid glass ball combination lenses; a cartoon science cat mascot ornament is placed at the center of the turntable. Visitors rotate the turntable to switch between different light-transmitting media and observe the central doll through the cylinders and spheres. They can intuitively see different imaging effects such as image stretching, distortion, inversion, and multiple overlapping images, and directly distinguish the refractive imaging differences between cylindrical lenses and spherical lenses. ★Scientific Principle: When light passes through transparent media such as water and glass, refraction and interface reflection occur. Cylinders and spheres are curved light-transmitting media. The curvature of the curved surface changes the light propagation path, causing visual distortion: 1. A single water-filled cylinder is a cylindrical lens, which only refracts light in the horizontal direction and does not refract in the vertical direction. The observed object will produce horizontal stretching and flattening deformation; 2. A solid glass ball is a complete spherical convex lens. After light converges, it forms an inverted reduced real image; 3. A water-filled cylinder combined with a glass ball combination optical path: light undergoes multiple refractions and reflections through multiple curved surfaces, and the image will simultaneously show deformation, inversion, and multiple overlapping images; The exhibit uses multiple groups of curved light-transmitting media for comparison, intuitively demonstrating how different curved lenses change the light path and imaging form.
