The Mysterious Smile

Optics & Eye Health

★Exhibit Content: Binocular Rivalry Visual Illusion ★Interaction: Electromechanical Interaction ★Operation: 1. Read the exhibit description plate to learn about binocular rivalry. 2. One visitor sits on the chair opposite the exhibit and remains still as a model. 3. The participant moves the adjustable lens to either end, places their forehead against the metal plate with peepholes, and looks straight ahead at the model through the holes. 4. The participant places their hand at the corresponding white baffle position and slowly moves it up and down, observing the visual effect of the model's face appearing and disappearing. 5. Leave the interaction area after the experiment. ★Exhibit Description: This exhibit is an optical electromechanical interactive science exhibit, consisting of a shaped support frame, three white baffles, two sets of adjustable lens components, a AC100-240V, 50/60Hz spotlight, a rubberwood tabletop, and a metal plate with peepholes. The spotlight provides ambient lighting. The participant's eyes separately receive the real-life portrait and the white panel image reflected by the lens. When the hand moves up and down in front of the reflected light path to block the reflected light, the brain fuses the two visual signals, producing the strange visual illusion of the model's face flickering in and out, intuitively demonstrating the physiological phenomenon of binocular rivalry and human brain visual fusion. ★Scientific Principle: The left and right eyes can simultaneously receive completely different images, and the brain fuses the two images. In this exhibit, one eye sees the real person, while the other eye sees the white baffle reflected by the lens; the moving hand intermittently blocks the reflected light path, causing one visual signal to be intermittently present, and when the brain fuses the images, it produces the wonderful illusion of the face appearing and disappearing, demonstrating the human optical mechanism of binocular rivalry and brain visual synthesis.
