Constant Velocity Joint

Life & Safety

★Exhibit Content: The structural composition of an automotive constant velocity joint and the principle of constant velocity transmission ★Interaction: Pure mechanical interaction ★Operation: 1. Turn the handwheel on the protective cover to drive the rotating wheel; 2. Turn the handwheel on the tabletop to change the angle of the rotating wheel, and observe whether the rotational speeds of the shafts on both sides are always the same. ★Exhibit Description: The exhibit consists of a square display stand, a transparent acrylic protective cover, a ball-cage constant velocity joint structural model, an angle adjustment handwheel, and a drive handwheel. It is a recommended exhibit from the PopsciCat Exhibit Mall. Inside the protective cover, the core mechanical structure of the constant velocity joint is fully presented, including the star sleeve, spherical shell, power-transmitting steel balls, cage, and drive shaft assembly. Visitors can turn the drive handwheel to drive the drive shaft and the universal joint, directly observing the transmission state and motion trajectory of the steel balls; turning the tabletop handwheel adjusts the angle between the shafts on both sides. Regardless of how the angle changes, the shafts on both sides always maintain the same rotational speed, allowing visitors to intuitively experience the transmission characteristics of the constant velocity joint and understand the core mechanical principle of the automotive transmission system. ★Scientific Principle: The constant velocity joint is a core component of a car's transmission system. Its function is to transmit the engine's power from the transmission to the drive wheels while adapting to the changes in shaft angle caused by wheel bounce during vehicle operation. In a fixed ball-cage constant velocity joint, the star sleeve is connected to the drive shaft and has 6 grooves on its outer surface forming inner raceways; the inner surface of the spherical shell has corresponding grooves forming outer raceways. Six power-transmitting steel balls are installed in each groove and are constrained in the same plane by the cage. Power is output from the drive shaft through the power-transmitting steel balls and the spherical shell. During operation, no matter how the angle between the two shafts changes, all 6 steel balls participate in power transmission, and the power transmission point is always located on the bisecting plane of the angle of the drive shaft. Therefore, the two shafts always transmit power at the same angular velocity, stably achieving constant velocity transmission.
