Optical-Fiber Transmission

Medium Exhibit Stands · Optics

Operation: Press the "Start" button, turn the dial to direct the light onto the collection area on the tabletop, and observe the changes in the display area. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of two parts: a total internal reflection demonstration device and an optical fiber transmission demonstration device. The optical fiber transmission demonstration device is composed of a light-emitting device, optical fibers, a rotating disk, and a display area. Press the button, rotate the disk, and observe the changes in the image in the display area. Scientific Principle: What is the phenomenon of total internal reflection of light? When light travels from an optically denser medium to an optically less dense medium, and the incident angle is greater than the critical angle, the refracted light completely disappears, leaving only the reflected light. This phenomenon is called total internal reflection. The optical fiber transmission demonstration device consists of a light source, a pattern disk, an optical fiber bundle, a handwheel, and a start button. Press the button to turn on the light source, turn the handwheel to select a pattern, and the same pattern will appear in the display area at the other end of the optical fiber. How does the optical fiber transmit patterns? Optical fibers use the principle of total internal reflection to transmit light from one end to the other. A single optical fiber transmits a single point of light, while an array of optical fibers formed by a bundle can also transmit images, so the pattern on the disk appears in the display area. Optical fiber communication uses light as a carrier and utilizes the principle of total internal reflection to enable nearly lossless long-distance transmission of information.
