Maglev Turntable
Operation: Press the "Start" button and observe whether the metal block levitates to gain a deeper understanding of eddy currents, eddy current magnetic fields, and magnetic forces. Exhibit Overview: The exhibit mainly consists of a display stand, an aluminum disc, a metal block with an embedded permanent magnet, an acrylic cover, and a motor that drives the aluminum disc to rotate. When the "Start" button is pressed, the motor drives the aluminum disc on the table to rotate. The rotating aluminum disc generates an induced current and an induced magnetic field, forming an eddy current magnetic field. This eddy current magnetic field is opposite in direction to the magnetic field of the permanent magnet above, creating repulsion, so the metal block above slowly levitates. Scientific Principle: Why does the metal block levitate in the air? This is an eddy current effect. The eddy current effect refers to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. When a bulk conductor is placed in an alternating magnetic field or moves in a fixed magnetic field, an induced current is generated within the conductor, and this current closes within the conductor. The metal block above the aluminum disc has an embedded permanent magnet. The motor drives the aluminum disc to rotate rapidly, generating an induced current in the aluminum disc, thereby producing an induced magnetic field. Its magnetic field is exactly opposite to the magnetic field of the magnet above it. The metal block (magnet) above slowly levitates under the combined action of gravity and repulsive force.
