Dancing Static Ball

Medium Exhibit Stands · Electromagnetism

Operation: Press the start button and observe the movement of the ball. Function Overview: The central sphere of the exhibit is a negatively charged electrostatic electrode. The foam ball wrapped with a metal band is polarized under the electrostatic field of the central electrode: the side facing the central electrode becomes positively charged while the other side becomes negatively charged, but the total charge of the ball remains neutral. Since the positively charged side faces the central electrode, it moves toward the central electrode due to opposite charges attracting. After touching the electrode, it acquires the same charge as the electrode. The ball with the same charge then moves away from the central electrode due to electrostatic repulsion. When it touches the outer grounding ring, the charge is released, and the ball returns to its initial state, repeating the previous motion.
