Weigh from Afar

Medium Exhibit Stands · Electromagnetism

Operation: 1. Take a small personal item and place it on the left ordinary weighing pan, observe the displayed weight value; 2. Then place the small item on the right suspended tray, observe the displayed weight value. Function Overview: The exhibit consists of an ordinary electronic scale with digital display and a non-contact weighing electronic scale. The non-contact weighing electronic scale is composed of a set of mutually repelling magnets, a guiding mechanism, and an ordinary electronic scale. Visitors can place their personal items on it for weighing and compare the differences between the two scales. Scientific Principle: How is the weight of an item on the suspended tray, which does not touch the weighing pan, measured? The non-contact scale uses an ordinary electronic scale identical to the one on the left, but a magnet is installed on top of the scale, and another magnet is installed under the tray. Due to the characteristics of magnets (like poles repel, opposite poles attract), these two magnets installed in the same orientation form a magnetic levitation combination. When an item is placed on the tray, it exerts pressure on the electronic scale below through the magnetic levitation combination, and the weight of the item is measured. However, although we have calibrated the electronic scale to zero and removed the weight of the tray and other objects from the reading, due to the friction between the magnets and the transparent plastic tube, the actual weighing result of the non-contact scale still has a certain measurement error. Think about it, where in daily life is the principle of magnets (like poles repel, opposite poles attract) applied?
