Collision Balls (Energy-Conservation Pendulum)
Operation: Gently pull up one ball and release it, and observe the collision phenomenon; then pull up two or more balls to collide and observe the phenomenon. Function Overview: This exhibit demonstrates the conservation of momentum when demonstration balls of the same shape and mass (with centers of gravity on a horizontal line) collide. Visitors can learn about mechanical principles, gravity, and the laws of motion just like Newton and Galileo. Visitors gently pull up one ball and release it to observe the collision; then pull up two or more balls to collide and observe the phenomenon. Through the demonstration, visitors can understand the principle that action and reaction forces are equal and opposite. Scientific Principle: This exhibit demonstrates the conservation of momentum when demonstration balls of the same shape and mass collide. Visitors can learn about mechanical principles and understand the laws of motion just like Newton and Galileo. Visitors can pull up a ball; if a ball at one end is pulled up and then let go, the ball at the other end will swing outward the same distance. This starts a perpetual motion that only stops due to friction. Visitors will be surprised to find that Newton's first law (i.e., an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an opposite force) was actually proposed 2000 years before Newton by a Chinese philosopher in the Mo Jing.
